Microsoft’s latest ad campaign, Laptop Hunters, takes direct aim at Mac prices.
In the first of what will most likely be a series of TV commercials, “Lauren” is given $1000 budget to find a 17″ laptop that will meet her needs. She enters a Mac store only to come away empty-handed pointing out that the only laptop under $1000 has a 13″ screen. The jab at Apple comes after she leaves the store saying, “I’m just not cool enough to be a Mac person.”
After settling on a $699 HP notebook from Best Buy, the ad ends with Lauren saying, “I’m a PC, and I got just what I wanted.” According to the Windows Team Blog, “the Laptop Hunters are not told they are taking part in an ad campaign by Microsoft. Instead, they think they are participating in market research. Each participant set their own budget for a laptop to meet their own unique needs. We then provide the participant with cash and sent them out to find and purchase a laptop—all in a single day. We followed them with a camera crew throughout the course of their hunt and recorded their experiences. Everything is completely unscripted.”

It may be unscripted, but not unedited.
